How to remove red wine stains from sofas and rugs

Red wine has dyes that set quickly: the sooner you act and the less you rub, the better it comes out.

Step by step

  1. 1Blot as much as possible with white paper or cloth, without rubbing.
  2. 2Spray the stain remover and leave for 2–3 minutes.
  3. 3Work from the outside in with a soft brush and blot again.
  4. 4Extract with diluted upholstery cleaner and finish with a vacuum-only pass.
  5. 5If a shadow remains, repeat the stain remover once dry instead of working the wet fabric harder.

Before any stain: check the label (W, WS, S or X) and test the product on a hidden spot.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from upholstery cleaners, short answers

What upholstery cleaning companies ask us most often about products, machines and method.

Will an old wine stain still come out?

It often lightens a lot with two or three rounds of stain remover and extraction, letting it dry in between. On light natural fibres a shadow may remain: tell the customer before you start.
